GameSpy: Now the game is a first-person shooter. Genghis Khan passed through there, so did the Brits, and the Romans. It's actually set in a real place in North Africa called the Rub' Al-Khali, which for an empty place has been pretty popular over the years. Though as you push in towards this root evil, the means of warfare becomes cruder and more brutal. So first they have to take on Nazis, who are dead and possessed, and work their way down through history. And our guys - who are really Special Forces, special occult forces - have to cut though layers upon layers of different soldiers. As a result, what you have is this playground with generation after generation of soldiers, each with a different style of fighting, and even a different attitude towards evil. So generations pass between each surge of this evil. And every hundred years it tries to push its way out, and another group has to stop it. The idea was that a force of evil is out in the desert, but it's an evil that's been locked away for years by people whose lives are spent keeping it locked away. GameSpy: So how did this game come about? Clive Barker: I had an idea that I liked. But as we found out when we had a quick chat with the hellraising Brit, there are things that scare him, too. Like Undying, it's a very scary first-person shooter that's designed to frighten you as you frag. Which is why we can't give Clive Barker too much grief for the half-dozen years between his last video game, 2001's Undying, and his new one, Jericho, which Codemasters is releasing on the PS3, 360 and PC.

Especially if you scare the crap out of us. But when you also write books, make movies, do comics, paint, and have a rich personal life. For most game developers, taking six years between projects is unacceptable.
